Cannot diagnose brown lawn

Posted by eschwede CT (My Page) on

For the 2nd straight year my lawn is browning and not due to lack of water or fertilizer. I have been told by a professional that I have lawn fungus so I treat it and it doesn't appear to go away. Does anyone have a thought what this could be ?? This photo was from May - lawn looks 10 times worse now.

Well that photo is out of focus, so it's not going to do much good. A better pic would help, so would some close ups. From that picture, I see a lot of white. Are your grass blades covered with a whitish residue? If so, then you might have powdery mildew. What kind of grass do you have? What are your watering and fertilizer schedules? If no better pictures are possible, can you describe what you see?

Does that camera have a focus function? That pic might be worse than the first one.

Uh, yep. Get a pic of about a 6x6" area and focus on one blade of grass.

Have you looked for bugs? If you dig up a square of the turf see if there are any grubs under there. Maybe they are nibbling at the roots of your lawn, that's all i can think off.

atleast from what i can make out, you appear to have red thread. take a closer look and see if it looks anything like the picture..... from a distance it just looks like patches of brown grass but upon taking a closer look you should be able to see the pinkish fungus. there are 2 common reasons for red thread. moisture or lack of nitrogen. are you watering in the evening? i had some red thread earlier this year, not sure if it was caused by rain and cool nights or if it was because of low level of nitrogen. either way i applied some milorganite which is a organic nitrogen fertilizer to the areas with red thread and that seemed to do the trick. milorganite can be purchased at most Home Depots....

It is definitely turf disease. I can't tell for sure if it is pythium blight or not. Since you are desperate, and to cover all bases, contact your nearest John Deere Landscapes or Lesco dealer and tell them you need to purchase enough Heritage G fungicide to apply 2 applications 14 days apart at the curative rate. You'll also need to know how much area you are treating in order to get enough material. Make sure they have it in stock, and then go get it. Follow the directions for the proper application.
