Grass dilemma

I have a plague of Bermuda in 4 sections of my lawn (the strips along the sidewalk and one along the steps, as well as the small backyard). I have one section that is always lush, though I'm not sure what kind of grass it is. The section opposite of the lush is the worst I have, I have re-seeded it once or twice a year, both Spring and Fall and never gotten any stand of grass and the Bermuda crept back in. Now, I am all-organic (only spray Poison ivy), so I know that is a handicap for a truly lush lawn, but any tips for what to plant in that area? It is in semi-shade, 10 feet from a birch tree. I have dug all the dirt out a couple times and replaced it with compost to no avail. I don't know if you think zoysia will have any effect there. I have also read that St. Augustine is good for choking out Bermuda, but I guess it doesn't grow in Zone 6. Thanks!

RE: Grass dilemma

The organic approach is no handicap for having a lush lawn. In fact you can do things with organics that you cannot do with chemicals.

If you still have the soil that you dug out, now you can pull out the compost and replace the soil. Compost is not a very good medium for growing plants. Compost is not much more than depleted organic matter but with bazillions of microbes. You need soil to grow grass.

If you have partial shade, then most of the grasses are out of the equation and fescue varieties are your best option.

The bermuda is there because the concrete heats up during the day and releases heat all night into the surrounding soil. That dries out the soil and the only grass that can stand that heat is bermuda.
