| I am having a stump ground to six inches below ground.
It is going to leave a large area to reseed. (100 square ft Going to buy bags of soil at home depot. What kind of soil would you buy. The cheapest top soil is 40 pounds for 1.79. Is that good enough to grow grass in or should I spend more money and get scotts soil for grass seeding? |

| Been there, done that. 1. Are they going to remove all of the grindings?. 2. If not, you are going to want to remove everything that has chips in it or you are going to have fungus growth (the decaying roots are going to create enough on their own) and poor soil for years. 3. As it is likely going to take 1 1/2 - 2 yards of soil to fill, you may be better off (cost and labor wise) having screened soil delivered. Suggest: once they are done and the hole is cleaned out, measure the volume of the hole, then determine if you want to use bags or have good, screened soil delivered. |

| Yes, I am going to remove all the grindings. Guess the cheap topsoil will work OK. Won't seed it until end of August or should I seed right away and keep it will watered? Sound Good? They charge a lot to deliver soil here in New Jersey |

| I had to remove a lot ( way more than I had imagined) of the existing soil because the action of stump grinding results in a "rototilling" of the chips into the soil. Like I said, wait until the hole is cleaned out and measure the volume before you decide whether to buy bags or have soil delivered. A cubic yard of soil is going to be about 45 40# bags. Keep in mind that the soil is going to settle and you are going to need to add more fill to level it off. I'd just let it sit until Sept 1. If there is a great likelyhood of erosion, you can seed with an inexpensive PR seed (may be a losing proposition with this weather) or just cover it with a blanket and then RU it and reseed 1st of Sept. |
