Resodding

Hello all. I have a question. I have a small front yard with St. Augustine grass. I also have two 25 year old Live Oak tress that are both at least 12 ft tall. Part of my grass has either died or is dying. I am needing to put new sod in those areas. My question is, will that sod be able to take root with these two trees there. I know that when I water, the tree takes a lot of the water and I'm fairly certain this is why my grass is dying. There are exposed tree roots in my yard. I like the trees and would prefer to leave them. I'm not much of a lawn person and would appreciate any help with this. Thank you for the assistance.

If you don't like grass anyway, why don't you put in some other groundcover or perennials in the areas where the grass isn't thriving?

I would not allow grass to grow under a Live Oak. The only thing I would want under a Live Oak is double-shredded hardwood mulch.

We have a plant called cast iron (aspidistra) for about 5 feet away from the trunk under our oaks.

You might consider bringing in more soil and profiling it up over the roots. 25 years is not very old. Those roots are going to get bigger whether you cover them now or later.

The live oak in my yard is much larger, and probably at least 50 years old. Saint Augustine does grow beneath the live oak, but it hasn't always. It mostly depends on how much sun exposure is available beneath the tree, and how tall you mow your grass. The area under my tree gets late afternoon western sun. I also mow it at 4 inches tall, but the mower doesn't really remove anything because the grass doesn't get enough light to grow taller than 4 inch. The grass immediately surrounding the trunk of the tree is not thick at all, but it is there in sufficient quantities to maintain a green appearance from a distance. Previous owners of my home mowed the grass much shorter, and the saint augustine was nonexistant beneath the tree. Mow tall and water infrequently and see if it will spread.

If the areas of what you call dead grass is in heavy shade from the trees, it is the shade killing the grass, and if SA cannot grow there, no grass will grow there.
