I have a sodded bermuda grass lawn that is mowed and left tall. We have been seeing brown areas where it looks like the mower deck was unlevel. This work is done by hired lawn care by our association. We knew this grass should be cut short and after last cutting, we mowed the grass shorter. Now we have a brown lawn. The tall mowing left the grass brown underneath, but green on top. Will our brown lawn recover on its own or what could we do to help it recover faster?

How much of it did you cut off when you cut it short? You might have cut too much off at once and pissed off the Bermuda. I'm guessing alot of water is in order. I need to run my sprinkler at least 3 hours to achieve 1 inch of watering (per week). In browing this forum for a while it seems like much of the time lack of water is the issue with brown grass as you describe. Bermuda is super tough so it will recover fine. Any pics? Oh, and memorize the Bermuda Bible! Good luck!

Oh, and one other thing. Are these areas in a spot where they don't get equal sprinkler coverage? Maybe slap a tuna can on the brown spot and a tuna can where the lawn is nice and green and water as normal. Is there an equal amount of water in the cans afterward?

You should be fertilizing every 30 days with 39-0-0. You can also spray some Bonide brand liquid iron to help it green up. Might want a soil test too.

All good tips above. Plus you are going to have to move the cutting height up one notch. By doing that it will be green in 1-2 weeks and look really good around week three.

You didn't really hurt anything - after all, it IS bermuda. What you did was mow down below the tops of the bermuda stems that form on bermuda when mowed high. Bermuda recovers from the low mowing by sending out the grass blades from the stems at the new lower height. You will be fine before the week is out. The worst thing that might happen is the sunlight hitting the ground might allow weed seedlings to take root. If you want to take over management of your little corner of the world, you can mow it at this height all the time. When the weekly guy comes through, his mower will be set too high to cut anything - no harm. You will have to mow 2x per week to keep this going. Once you mow it low like that, it will go back to looking normal (and better than when mowed higher).
