Grow grass on red clay and slope

I bought this house last year and it had no grass in the back yard. All the top soil had washed away. I put in a gravel barrier to keep water from damaging my slab again. I put in st Augustine sod. I could not do the whole yard at one time so put them across the yard. I have lots of runners. Some are rooting and some are not. The ones not rooting are growing way above the ground. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well what you describe is Hardpan aka Ouklip. There is no inexpensive and/or easy fix. Hardpan is impervious to water and vital nutrients for the most part. You are going to have to break it up and bring in top soil.

    Where do you live?

That's normal for St Aug to have runners above the ground. Has nothing to do with the soil.

I live in Longview, Tx Close to Louisiana. These runners are really up high. I have tripped on them several times.
