Any disadvantage to pulling weeds in summer?

I'm in NJ and seeded a new tall fescue lawn very late spring to early summer. Now I know why they say not to do so. I got half weeds, half fescue. But, I don't mind taking the time to pull the weeds. But, there would be lots of bare spots. Apart from the ugliness of a patchy lawn, is there any disadvantage to removing them rather than allowing them to die on their own? I plan to rent a slit seeder in the fall.

Also, is there any way to patch the bare areas with grass seed and actually have success in the heat of the summer?

BTW, trying to establish an organic lawn in the process, though I did order sedgehammer for a nutsedge problem, I'm avoiding chemicals everywhere possible.

Thanks!
Jeff

You may sweat more than you would pulling weeds in spring and fall, but other than that, there shouldn't be a problem. However, that applies only to pulling, not to spraying. Spraying in hot weather can damage the grass and the spray can volatilize and drift to plants that you want (flowers, trees, etc).

Thanks. I was also concerned that by creating patches of bare soil that the soil would heat up too much from the sun and cause damage to the already established grass. But I guess I'm thinking too much. Newbie. Can you tell?

In terms of grasses that will grow in summer -- there aren't any cool season varieties that I am aware of that will take off in summer heat and drought. However, you might have some success with a quick germinating perennial ryegrass seed that you vigilantly keep moist for a week (this is hard to do under the summer sun). Frequent moisture also creates the perfect conditions for crabgrass and other warm season weeds to germinate, so it may not be worth the time and money.

Thanks for clarifying. That's what I thought would be the problem. I'll wait. Looking forward to a gorgeous autumn lawn!
