| Hello, I live in Buffalo NY and usually I dont need to water the lawn in summer due to frequent rainfall. But this year it hasnt rained in a while and temps are between 75-90F. Is it necessary to water the lawn?
Why do people water it...is it just to keep it green or will the lawn die if its not watered? I dont want to waste water and if its not necessary. Though I have seen around me sprinklers going on every morning and evening. I dont want to kill my grass, but if its just to keep it green then I am happy with my slightly light green/dry grass. Any comments welcome or whether to water or not and why do people water the lawn. |

| We water to keep it green which means it is alive. Brown is dead or dormant. Depends on what kind of grass you have as some will die without water and some will go dormant until water returns. Within reason. What kind of grass do you have? |

| I am not sure at all. Just moved into the house, so really dont know. I will ask the person who mows the lawn if he knows what kind of grass it is and update. |

| Cool season grasses will first go dormant as a defense mechanism. If they go without water long enough, they will eventually die. Some grasses, such as KBG will enter dormancy sooner, but be able to snap back after a longer dormant period. Tall fescue will resist dormancy longer, but once it goes dormant, there is a shorter time before it dies. Once rains start again, KBG will fill in any spots that died and became bare. tall fescue is a bunch grass and won't fill in bare spots. |

| ok, so I still havent been able to find out what kind of grass I have. I have started to water it, but the whole area hasnt yet received a good soaking. I leave early for work and come home late, so just been giving 30-45 min of water in different areas of the lawn each morning. It still looks light brown , some areas like hay and in some areas green. Not sure if its dead or dormant. But will keep watering once a week. I had an additional question regarding fertilizer, because I did not give any in the spring and not sure when the lawn was last fertilized. So from what I have been reading...Fall will be the best time for me to fertilize. My question is are stick /stake fertilizers available for lawns, the ones people use for shrubs and houseplants. Or are fertilizers only available in liquid and granular form. Minal |

| Lawn fertilizer comes in large bags and weigh 10 to 50 pounds depending on how much you buy. Liquid and stake fertilizers are going to cost more and give you extremely poor results. Why? Because it takes POUNDS of fertilizer for a lawn, not grams or ounces. You cannot fertilize now with chemical ferts but you can fertilize now with organic if you want to do something soon. Generally 2/3 to 3/4 of your lawn's nitrogen should go down in the fall. Skipping fertilizer in the late spring is not a huge issue but skipping the fall can give you a very weak start in the spring. Weak start leads to weeds all summer long. |
