I can't believe google searches aren't coming up with a specific answer...but with modern inground irrigation systems, are the heads flush with the ground when not actively watering, meaning, you can mow right over them, or do you have to flag them (or remember where they are) every time you mow?

The proper way would be to have the heads flush with the ground.

If properly installed the popup heads are flush with the ground or slightly recessed.

And the most interesting approach I've seen is to slant the risers at about a 60 degree angle so that when the mower rolls over one, it is not jamming a vertical riser down into the feed piping. There is an irrigation forum here at GW.

(You did and now there's a duplicate post)..... Anyways i prefer Hunter Industries sprinkler equipment mainly because of easy maintenance on the heads with my lawn & landscape company. The heads i use are completely buried almost a half inch below the surface. I did use rainbird sprinklers but they couldn't handle a bunch of weight since they are made of cheap plastic. I found myself repairing one everytime i mowed (disadvantages of having a very heavy mower). But yeah they should be flush or slightly recessed into the ground. And as dchall stated above there is an irrigation forum here at GW :):)
Here is a link that might be useful: Hunter below ground irrigation systems
