Help identifying/treating weed in lawn

Hello all,

Can anyone help me identify and address the weed shown in the image?

I moved into the house 2 years ago and at the time it was only a small patch, but has continually expanded.

The area in which it started (and where it is the most thick) is in the shade for most of the morning and then gets the evening sun.

I am new here, so if there is any additional information that I can provide that would be useful please let me know. I try to take very good care of my lawn, but do not know all of the types, names, and specifics.

Looks like button weed to me but I'm no expert. I have the same thing going on in my yard. I was told by my fertilizer man to put triplet on it every two weeks to get it under controll. I have Bermuda hybrid grass. Make sure if you use triplet it won't harm your grass. Good luck. I'm having a hard time getting rid if it also.

Those are wild violets. Extremely nasty little weed that spreads like crazy and is very hard to kill. Triclopyr does pretty good at getting rid of it but it takes persistance and needs to be applied once per week for at least a month or until it is completely gone. Downside is Triclopyr will kill bermuda and from the photos it looks like your lawn is bermuda. I've been battling this stuff all year.

Thanks for the replies.

In the reading that I have done, I have come across wild violet and it looked right to me, but i've never seen it produce a flower like any description of wild violet i've read.

Also I'm no expert and my lawn was well established before i moved into the house, but I think that it is Bermuda as you mentioned. I definitely don't want to harm the rest of the lawn while trying to get rid of the weed.

Are there any other suggestions for helping to treat it?

Metsulfuron is listed to be bermuda friendly but I have no experience with it. I can tell you that the triclopyr will indeed kill bermuda as I have serveral bermuda patches in my yard that has suffered from it. I'm planning on a complete rennovation this fall anyway and intend to get rid of the bermuda and go all TTTF.

Tarheel fan, I'm not sure what that weed is but I have it too. Not sure where you're at but I'm in Lexington. Outside of Round Up I haven't found anything that works. It seems pretty aggressive too as it started out as just a few small spots and has spread rapidly. I Googled button weed and looks like a match. One site said 2-4-D and dicamba would kill it but that hasn't worked for me yet. Maybe someone else can help us both out here?
