Got crabgrass ANYWAY... grr

In west mi, cut twice weekly @ 3", 1-1.5" of water per week. Scott's 4 step program.

Put step 1 / pre-emergant down when soil temps hovered around 50f.

Haven't had any weeds to speak of, but crabgrass is happening here and there in small quanity everywhere... very disappointing!

Can someone suggest a fertilizer program for next year that will reward me better than Scott's has? I'm not disappointed with my lawn... but it seems I need to drop another pre-emergent in like early july?

I'm treating 15,000 sqft please don't suggest organic.... i'm not rich.

There are very effective selective herbicides for treating crabgrass. You will have to treat your lawn in a "custom" manner. Scotts cannot predict or include in their package something to treat everything (i.e. lawn disease treatment). If they did that it would cost everyone more money and wouldn't do any good for those that don't have the problem.

Pre-emergant makes a big difference, but it will not control every little bit of crabgrass that wants to come up. For you, I would recommend Weed-B-Gon Max. It is a good product for homeowners to apply, and is readily available in box stores and such. Be careful to follow the label still. It takes it's sweet time to kill the crabgrass, but should do the trick - provided you don't have a big "crop" of CG. While the temps. are too high to spray, just try to keep them from seeding by mowing often enough (it sounds like you already are). Then spray when things cool off.

Where do you live?
What kind of grass do you have?
Is shade an issue?
How often do you water?
Were you getting frequent rain before the crabgrass hit?

Your problem is unlikely to be caused by fertilizer.

I live in West Michigan, KBG lawn, not much shade, I make sure the lawn recieves 1.0-1.5" per week and all at once, we did get a TON of rain lately.

Not saying the fertilizer was the cause, but my fertilization / pre-emergance PROGRAM is the problem.

I think the pre-emergent wore off too early and am looking for a chemical alternative to my scott's 4 step system.

In the front yard it was sprase enough that I could pull the crabgrass manually and the lawn looks stellar, but in the backyard where I get pretty much constant sun all day there's too much to mess with... just have to wait for it to die back there now unless someone's got a better idea.

I totally wiped out a huge patch of CG about 15' sq. W/Round Up through a hose end sprayer. The temps are in the 90's here so it really worked fast. I also bought the more expensive concentrate w/ the purple top and in just a few hours it was apparent. The less expensive works well. Just be prepared to wait a little longer. If you're not in a hurry that is the way to go.

I then resod w/Burmuda. I would imagine your KBG season is around the corner. Can you reseed a Fall patch then? Hope this helps.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make you repeat yourself about the location. Missed it the first time.

Somehow your grass left an opening for the crabgrass to get established. There must have been thin spots - maybe near the edge of the property or where there is a concrete sidewalk??? Otherwise you are doing everything exactly right...hence the ANYWAY in your subject title.

It could also be something buried in the soil that is retaining heat or possibly resulting in thin topsoil layer that dries out quickly. Sometimes construction workers will leave chunks of concrete, asphalt, or large rocks behind and the landscaper simply folds them into the project. When they heat up during the day, they hold the heat through the night and effectively dry the soil out.

Does any of this ring a bell? Did you think you had a dense turf coming into the season?
