James, congratulations on your new home! Mushrooms are generally taken as a sign of good soil health, but as you know some can be harmful. IMHO "edible mushroom identification" is not something for hobbyists to dabble in, so I would pick them as you see them. There is nothing else you can do about them, anyway - the tool most recommended for their removal is a 9-iron. But if you have a curious child on that lawn, I would pick them out rather than knock them all over the place. Good luck!

Jaime--The answers around here are usually a bit more helpful than the ones you've gotten. I'll try to help a bit.

Mushrooms often grow in lawns, especially if there is a lot of moisture and/or dead wood under the surface.

I never worry about them, but I don't have a child young enough to try eating them. Since there are some varieties that are poisonous, you might want to keep your son away from those areas. You can also try going into those areas and kicking the mushroom caps over. Once they get knocked down, they won't usually last very long.

There are products that will kill the mushrooms, but I'd be more concerned about letting a child play on a lawn that had been treated with one of those products.

Cornmeal (the same kind as you get at the grocery store) can help with some fungal problems, but I think it's more helpful with the kind that attack and kill the grass, not the kinds that you're seeing.

Sort of a twilight-zone moment here, I know that there were a bunch more posts on this thread last I checked, that have been deleted, and mostly for good reason I am sure, but I wonder why Philes' posts were. He offered some good advice here, just like he always does.

Anyway, I hope that you post again Jamesn! Would love to hear how you decide to deal with your mushrooms.

I think GW deleted responses that had any potential to be inflammatory. I think Philes gave some good advice, but also reacted strongly to some of the less helpful posts. I think he used a TLA that "masks" a swear word, and that is technically a violation of the TOS.
