Strange grass or weed? How to kill?

HI, There is a patch of this bright, yet skinny green grass/weed growing in my father's lawn--which is currently Marathon/tall fescue. He is in Southern California. There seems to be seed pods in the middle with 3 branches of grass attached. How does he get rid of it--what kind of herbicide? I have attached some pictures--thanks

That is green kyllinga. It is closely related to nutgrass. Neither one is a true grass. They are sedges. GK is slightly less aggressive than nutgrass but harder to get rid of - at least in my experience. I have gotten rid of nutgrass many times simply by withholding moisture. Nutgrass likes soggy soil. The green kyllings likes dry soil. My soil.

Treat it with Sedgehammer or with Image. Read the label carefully.
