Bermuda Lawn Warning

Hey folks TW here. It is hot and dry as you know what in the Midwest and South. Take TW's advice unless you have unlimited supply of water and can afford to water every other day.

Stop fertilizing, and cut back on water and let the Bermuda go semi-dormant, and raise up the cutting height a bit to conserve moisture. Just give it enough water so as to keep some green tint to it.

When the heat breaks and wetter weather arrives you can fertilize again if it is not too late in the season before first frost. But pushing fertilizer on Bermuda or any grass right now when it is triple digits with tremendous amounts of water is asking for big trouble.

Letting it go dormant is actually a good thing for Bermuda in the summer. Sort of like a Siesta is in the dessert, a good nap leave you refreshed when it cools off. It will also just about wipe out all weeds.

So take it easy out there and let the Bermuda rest a bit.

Thank Texas

It has been difficult for most of us to manage with this intense heat. Good to know it will be OK. Glad to have the advice earlier this season to prep for this heat, my lawn actually is doing great and I do not have a irrigation system,
Here is what I have now, don't get me wrong , I have had to pay close attention to various spots that dry out sooner than others, but, all the benefit is from following your advice earlier in the season
thanks for the help

Great looking lawn, keep up the good work, but my warning is more for the folks in the central part of the country like TX, OK, AR, KS, LA, & TN where the High Pressure bubble has been hanging out for some time with triple digits for the last few weeks, no rain, and low humidity.

I hear on the East Coast temps have been high in the 90's but getting some rain. Bermuda thrives in the 90's, high humidity, with decent water levels. That mimics the Tropics where it comes from.

But places like Tulsa, OKC, Ft Smith, and DFW is scorching and bone dry air. Tulsa hit 111 today followed by OKC at 109, with DFW at 106. That part of the country is hotter and drier than out here in AZ, even Phoenix is cooler and wetter right now.

What prompted me to speak up is pictures and reports from my family farm back in TX. The whole sod farm is partially dormant.

Good Advice. I have a question.

I laid celebration bermuda 2 weeks ago today. I know in the heat, but I had too. Been watering twice a day and I applied a starter fertilizer(sod farm did not) and it's looking great and green. That being said, I am in austin and it's hot dry and not raining much. What watering schedule do you think I Should do now two weeks out. And with this heat, should I fertilize at the one month mark or wait until it cools off a bit? I cut it today for the first time.

KRaye1, find the Bermuda Bible online, download, and memorize. TW wrote it for people like you. And he added the little annotation above for people NOT like you. You must continue watering because your roots are not established yet. But still, do not fertilize with chemicals now. Wait until the heat breaks or the rains come. If you want to fertilize with organics, you can do that any time without fear of hurting anything.

Before you change your watering routine, make sure the sod is knit to the soil underneath. Try to pull some up. The pieces of sod should not come up. When you do change your watering, you are aiming for 1 inch per week all at one time. Transition to that by adjusting the frequency and duration of watering.

What height did you mow it?

How long are you watering and do you know how long it takes your system to put an inch down? Measure with cat food or tuna cans.

Hows that sod farm looking now. I think Dallas/Ft. Worth area has gotten some good showers this past week or so.

Hey TW,
You can also keep that high pressure bubble over Arizona. I don't need it back anytime soon.

Well pictures from the family farm in TX look good, an dI hear the weather back in TX has been really nice for the last 2 weeks.

Up here in Prescott the high pressure bubble (heat wave)arrived here around Ayg 7 with temps in the high 90's up here, and 110 to 115 down in the valley of Phoenix. However it petered out up here a week and been in the mid 80's since then with about an amazing 2 inches of rain.

Right now Arizona, even Phoenix, is beautiful and green with all the rain we have had this monsoon season. In July and so far in August I have had 5.5 inches of rain. Unheard of here.

Lol. You paint the gravel and sand green? Maybe just cover the yard with green scorpions.
