Dug Up Lawn Recovery

My lawn was dug up because natural gas lines (plastic tubes that run underground) are being installed in my town for the first time. My property is along the main highway and it is on the corner of a side street, and the location of it made it vulnerable to being dug up. Between that and the low value of the property, it was a sitting duck to be selected for being dug up.

So near the highway on the edge of my property, a trench that was when it was dug about 15 yards long and one yard wide was dug. The dirt scar that is there now is about 20 yards long and 5 yards wide (60 feet by 15 feet). That strip used to be mostly grass (with a few weeds) and now it is dug up dirt.

I am not really a "lawn person," and ultimately, I personally don't care very much how the lawn looks. And I am not going to be selling this property for the foreseeable future. So this is not some kind of a crisis for me.

On the other hand, the dirt scar does look hideous and now all of my efforts to make my property look nice are down the drain. Although I myself don't really care to any extent, I do care a little about what others think. And now people who walk by or drive by my property will notice the dirt and they will also now notice some of the much more minor flaws in my lawn and house that went unnoticed before.

I will most likely have neither the time nor the money to plant grass or do anything else to the scar area.

I have two questions:

(1) Assuming I do nothing, roughly how many years will it take for the dirt to transform back to roughly what it was (mostly grass but with some weeds)?

(2)Assuming I do nothing, will what comes back be a greater percentage of weeds and a lower percentage of grass than before? (A rough percentage estimate is that before it was dug up, the lawn was 85% grass and 15% weeds.)

Thanks so much for any answers and / or for links to information about how the dirt will be changing over the coming years.
