| I'm in San Antonio. I'm in the process of resodding a Bermuda lawn to St Augustine. I only get a couple of hours of morning sun and the rest of the day is full shade. The Bermuda was always thin. Weeds, drought, and cold have left it a mess. I did the back yard a few years earlier and used a tiller. It was a problem with the inground sprinklers and outdoorlighting wires. I didn't do such a good job of getting the dirt very level either. I want to do a better job on the front.
It was pretty bad in the spring and I haven't watered at all duing this drought. I was advised to just use roundup, aerate, compost and resod. I just did the roundup. My questions are... If I just aerate it how do I deal with the extra lawn height and edges around drives and sidewalks? Won't it be too high? Do I get a sod cutter and peel off the old lawn? I really don't want to try tilling again. I'm afraid I won't get it level or damaging the sprinklers. What about the drought and watering in a new yard. Is it wise to do it now with the current water restrictions? I really can't have it dead all summer. The HOA might get on me. Thanks for any help. |

| Do not till, Good choice. A few days after roundup you will want to start watering. You want the grass to start growing so you can kill it again. You will want to repeat the roundup once a week for 3-4 weeks. Get someone with a box blade to level the yard. you are going to have to water the new sod a couple times a day. Can you do that? |
