| Long timer lurker, first time poster.
I recently bought a new house. I live in Davenport Iowa. which is in south eastern Iowa close to the border of Illinois. I believe a tree was cut down in the front yard and grinded down and buried. During spring the area over this spot stays green, when summer comes it turns brown. Is there anything I can do this fall to help it stay green or at least not go completely brown? I was thinking adding more soil to this area? I appreciate all help offered. Edward |

| If the stump is a few inches below the surface (test with a screwdriver) then the grass will always struggle there as the soil will dry out faster, and the roots will always be shallow. When the weather cools off and the rains return you can remove the sod and dig out the stump, then fill the whole in with soil, compact it so it won't sag, and replace the sod. |

| Wont the decaying wood also null nitrogen out of the soil? I know that it is a breeding ground for fungus. |

| As long as wood is buried underground, it will take decades to decompose. Once you expose it to the air, it will decompose much faster. I was able to get a 10 year old stump to completely decay in 2 years by unburying the top and keeping it moist for a few weeks. Once the decay started, it continued through our drought. Wood rot is a wonderful thing when you want it to happen. |
