Grass turning brown (pictures)

I reseeded my lawn last September. It was doing great until about two weeks ago. Between watering and rainfall I thought I was keeping it adequately watered. The two photos are from July 1 and July 6. It has browned a LOT in that short time frame. I have watered it early each day except for July 4 (about 1 hour of water).

I have applied Scott's fungus control twice (http://www.scotts.com/smg/catalog/productTemplate.jsp?proId=prod10330 008&itemId=cat50060). The first time was the beginning of June when I saw a few hints of brown, and it seemed to green back up. The second time was the middle of last week

I have not checked for grubs yet, but as fast and as thoroughly as it as turned brown I didn't suspect that to be the cause.

I assume it's done for this summer and I'll have to overseed again this fall, but what can I do differently so I don't have this problem next year?

Thanks

One thing is not to water every day and allow the roots to establish themselves deeply in the soil so they can survive the summer sun and lack of rain. An hour a day is way too much water -- it can cause things like root and crown rot. Give it a deep soaking once a week (an hour or two) when there is no rain and that's it.

Has this soil been aerated or de-thatched recently? Compaction is often a cause of this type of browning.

Do a soil test and see what nutrients you are lacking and your soil pH. If those are all ok, then you can start looking at things like grubs and fungus.

Thanks for the reply. I was not watering everyday until the last few days. I was watering maybe every 5 days or so when hot and no rain.

The lawn was aerated and de-thatched last fall. The pH was low and I have applied lime twice since then, but it needs about six applications of lime to get the pH up so that will take some time.

I'm just at a loss on what to do. The whole yard died last summer, and I just assumed I wasn't watering enough. I reseeded and was trying to only water when needed and then a deep watering. But here I am with a rapidly browning yard again.

Seeing as you are in Missouri, I would guess you have brown patch or something. Mine (I'm near KC) has terrible problems with it. If I were you, I would get something like propiconazole and treat the lawn. Granules aren't as effective as spray, I believe, but I have had some decent success with them. If you really wanted to get it dealt with you could do the powerful yet extremely expensive "Disarm" or "Heritage". Both of which are extremely expensive (they are similar products) but should work quite well.

While you may not see the "dead" grass come back, the fungicide should prevent the rest from getting it, and likely you will see significant overall improvement. I would try some liquid (if possible, otherwise granular) fungicide. It won't hurt anything to try. I have heard that if the humidity and temperature add up to above 150 then you will likely get brown patch. Also if the grass blades are wet for 14 or more hours.

Also, inspect the grass blades carefully. If there are some blades that have splotches of brown, yellow, etc in circles or random shapes, it would be a sign of brown patch. If everything is dead "lock, stock, and barrel", then it may be something else.

BTW, how much seed did you put down when you seeded?
