Ditch

We moved into this house about a year ago. This fall I plan to start work to on the lawn. The biggest feature that I must work around is the ditch in the front of the house. While it is only about 4 feet lower than the road, on the house side, at about 20 feet from the center of the ditch, the lawn is about 6 feet higher than the bottom of the ditch. The ditch falls about 12 feet in 100. The previous owner placed large (6 to 12") rocks in the bottom to prevent erosion. They cover about 4 feet of the bottom.
This is eastern North Carolina and the "soil" is clay and about 5% quartz.

Are there any suggestion for landscaping this area and make the ditch seem part of a lawn not the rural road.

I don't know how it fits in but next spring I hope to replace a gravel driveway. One of the solution for the rocks was covering them with gravel. I have not check local and state regulations on this.

Can you post a picture? I'm not visualizing this.

RE: Ditch

I just spent some time going through pictures of the house we have taken during the various project we have done since moving.

I cannot find a picture that truly shows the situation.

The best that I can describe it is that it is typical road construction in a new addition in an area that is rolling. The road does not go over the contour of the land but goes into high spots, leaving a ditch and a bank in front of the house on the original hill. The ditch bed is paved with these large stones.

The drive goes over a pipe 14" pipe laid in the ditch. The Drive way is about 5 feet above the ditch bed. but that is a different story.

Got it. Thanks.

To do what you really want would require removing the rocks. That's not what you want to hear/read. I've seen many a ditch that was pure grass.
