| This is my first post here, since I'm the spouse in charge of the rose beds, shrubs, while my husband is officially supposed to be looking out for the lawn (which someone else cuts).
Last fall he reseeded a big chunk of our backyard with fescue, but this year's lack of watering and the recent broiling temps here in St. Louis (zone 6a) have killed large swathes of the new stuff and now weeds are invading and it is getting out of control. I am just wondering if there is any type of mixed grass seed we could start now--if we water daily could we get it to germinate and grow? I can hand pull the weeds at this point, but if we leave them go it will be all weeds by fall. Or must I live with this horrific looking backyard for the next several months. Saving grace is at least it is the back, and front is relatively better. The lawn is southern exposure, drains fairly well, with clayish slightly alkaline soil. I can grow everything else here, so with a little attention it should be possible to rescue this neglected lawn, right? Thanks for any advice. |

| I live in the St. Louis area and feel your pain. This weather has been brutal on lawns. I've spent a small fortune keeping the lawn irrigated this summer. I will also be overseeing but plan on waiting until the weather cools around mid September. If you seed now and can keep the seeds wet long enough to germinate, the fragile baby blades will suffer in the heat. I strongly recommend waiting six weeks. By Thanksgiving you'll have nice, thick growth. Mike |

| Thanks for the advice. That's a good point that it is really only 6 weeks to wait now until mid-Sept. I think I'll over-seed at that point also. It has been a brutal year weather wise here--can't remember such a long stretch before where there was no cooling below the 80s even during the night. |
