| for the past three years, i've had these "Stripes" of some sort, what looks like dead grass, appear in my lawn.
http://imgur.com/EUBCy as you can see, there are three brown looking stripes running down my lawn. I bought this house about 7 years ago. It looks like the stripes are where the grass has been treaded by either a vehicle of some sort, or something similar? But i don't ever drive in the lawn (except the lawn mower), and live out in the country. (ie, no four wheelers or other vehicles). They all run abnormally parallel to each other which doesn't make much sense. At first i thought it might be where dead grass has been laying after mowing the lawn, but I don't mow in the direction the stripes are forming, and in addition, when the first one appeared I started catching the clippings in a bag instead of leaving them in the lawn to make sure I wasn't killing the grass. It first, this problem started with 1 stripe (the one pictured on the right) the 2nd appeared last summer, and now this summer as of a few weeks ago, the farthest one on the left. after googling, I can't figure out what this is or how to fix it. Can anyone help, offer any assistance, or point in the general direction for answers? |

| How do they align with your septic field? |
|
| Wow, Nice deduction. That did not come to mind, but I'm gonna bet it is the right analysis. |
|
| If it is not a septic tank, is there an old lane or the foundations of an old building. If it were me I would take an iron rod and check to see the depth of the top soil though the area and if there are any old foundations. |

| I'm with Andy, they probably correspond with the leach field pipes. The discolored grass can mean there is a problem with your septic system. |
|
| Ya think? Rather than state the obvious, just in case you think the OP couldn't put 2 and 2 together, why not at least explain how a septic system could be the problem? |
|
| This is the part i'm confused about. My septic lines i know for a fact run along my driveway (as the grass grows crazy fast as compared to all the other grass in the yard) How would the septic lines cause the grass to turn brown like it is pictured? |

| I guess my response wasn't as helpful as yours: "Wow, Nice deduction. That did not come to mind, but I'm gonna bet it is the right analysis." I am not a septic system specialist, so I cannot answer why exactly it's happening, but I'm sure there are a few reasons that can cause what the OP is seeing. Perhaps the OP doesn't really know anything about septic systems or leach fields, and couldn't in fact put two and two together. He stated that his septic line runs along the driveway, but most septic systems and leach fields are put in the back yard. Maybe he/she will now do some research and or call a septic system specialist to figure out what is causing the problem. |

| Maybe it is septic lines or maybe there is old foundation lanes as knuttle suggested. My experience with septic lines is my grass grows super fast wherever they run up to a foot or more in a weeks times. There are other possibilities too. Check the pH of the soil in those areas. You may find it's too alkaline for the grass you are growing. Many household chemicals are highly alkaline. High salt levels are another possibility. ww.ext.vt.edu/pubs/envirohor...26-617.html#L6 When was the last time your septic system was cleaned out? Is it an older system which isn't as deep as many newer systems? |

| My comment was directed to Andy10917, not as advice to the OP. I thought you where being coy and withholding the explaination as to how the effluent could affect turf. My comment towards you came off much harsher than intended and I apologize tiemco. I had (still have) no idea what is causing the OP's problem but the direction of Andy10917's question makes sense based on the picture. |

| As i recall i don't believe the septic system was ever cleaned out. The house was built in 1990 and i've been living there about 7 years now. I guess i'm just now aware of how it all works? The grass does indeed grow crazy quick on both sides of my driveway -- which was a dead giveaway to me that the septic lines were actually there are not where the brown grass is. Maybe i'm wrong? How would the septic lines cause brown grass when i know for sure they're on both sides of my driveway? it seems backwards to me. Maybe there's an extension of the septic system under the brown lines and its leaching all the nutrients? I'm just guessing at this point. |
