Creeping Charlie infestation

My lawn is heavily infested with creeping charlie (ie ground ivy). I really need to kill everything and just start from scratch.

To that end, if I lay cardboard over the whole thing and cover it with three inches of compost, would that be enough to kill it off? I'd strongly prefer not to use chemicals if I can.

Clear plastic will probably get the job done faster. The technique is called Solarization and it works well. This will literally kill all of the soil life, so be sure to add compost and compost tea after completing to bring it back to life.
