Thick spots in Bermuda

I have bermuda and am cutting it at the lowest setting (about 1 inch) and when my mower hits a really thick spot it bogs down or gets hung on the thickness and then after I got it through the spot the grass is white and has the circular roundness of my mower. Do I need to raise my blades (I don't want to in hopes to cut it low) or is there another issue going on? Thanks in advance!

How are you watering and fertilizing? It sounds like you have a few fertile spots. Is there any chance you have a water leak in an underground pipe?

no, the yard has a very gradual slope down (very slight) bit enough to make it thickr in spots. I am watering once a week for 3 hours or 1 inch with a hose and sprinkler and am fertilizing regular. so I basically have all of these round white spots, almost like I'm scalping it but there is no soil shown.

I have experienced that same problem. You should raise the cutting height to avoid it. Some Bermuda varieties can get thick and grow so fast and dense that there is no choice but to raise the deck. Some of the lower growing hybrids may not have that problem. In my opinion the best solution is to gradually raise the mower deck when the grass forces you to do so. Even mowing everyday will not avoid this problem. Been there and done that.

OK, thank you. Why are the bottom stocks of the grass white though? Shouldn't the grass be green the whole length of the stock? I guess I can try raising the mower to the next "half" length up to see if it still does this. I actually tried that once about a month ago but the grass then wasn't growing fast enough that I wasn't able to cut much but the grass seems to be hitting its growth peak right now (usually its much sooner but we've had a weird spring this year weather-wise). Thanks again.

Bermuda is not green the whole length of the stock. Only the top 1/3 or so

Where do you live? I should have asked that first. Spring in July is not unheard of. If it were summer in July I would suggest raising the mower to 1.5 inches, ala rdaystrom. Bottom of bermuda grass should be brown, not white. Can you take a picture and post it? We can help you with the details of posting if you can get some close ups.

Why are the bottom stocks of the grass white though? Shouldn't the grass be green the whole length of the stock? Not at all, the runners or stalk portion is a light tan color. What you are doing is scalping the grass removing all the leaf material just leaving the stems and twigs of the stalks.

Ok, thank you all. I believe that I am scalping the grass then...so I will raise my mower up a half notch. Here are the pics anyway.....they will go away in a few days once the grass grows a little.
Here is a link that might be useful: Pics of white spots or scalping

I meant the white spots will go away.

Tuck - Either mow more often so the clumps can't develop - and it can need mowing 2 or three times a week - or set the mower blades higher.
