Sudden Dead Patches of Grass

Posted by chadpurser LA (My Page) on

We've had a couple of weeks of heavy rain in the New Orleans area, after a long dry period. Parts of my centipede lawn started turning pale green and patted down. Now it is dead. Any ideas what it is? How can I kill whatever it is? See picture.

Thanks for any help.

You are probably looking down for the problem when you should be looking up. I have a couple spots where the grass is always thin. Turns out my roof drains rainwater off and out into the yard washing away the soil.

If that is not your situation, then look at the second picture. See how the spot is more or less circular? That is typical of fungal diseases. The solution I have found to work is to apply 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet of ordinary corn meal over the entire lawn now and follow up in 3 weeks. Don't skimp out on the second app.

I figured it was a fungus problem. I hadn't heard of the corn meal. I will investigate. Thank you.

There are chemical fungicides, but I've never had any luck with them. Corn meal was the first material that ever worked for me. It has worked every time I've tried it.

If you use chemicals, I would suggest coming back with compost once you are sure the fungus is gone. The fungicide will kill out many of the beneficial fungi in the soil. Compost will restore the fungi. Apply compost at no more than 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet.
