| I went through some old threads about slit seeding, core aerating and dethatching. What I've learned is that some hoppers on slit seeders available for rental may drop seed erratically and all slit seeders leave patterns based on the orientation of the passes.
Core aerators don't seem to be right for seeding because of the depth of the holes and inconsistency from hole to hole. So, am I right in assuming that the flailing blades of a dethatcher are perfect for disturbing a shallow and consistent amount of soil? If I don't care about harming my current lawn, wouldn't a perfect option for overseeding be to run a dethatcher at a depth of about 1/8 inch into the soil, broadcast the seed and fertilizer, rake over it with my grading rake, roll it with a roller, and water? Also, do dethatchers have settings that go deep enough for this? Thanks! |

| Dethatching is my least favorite. I double aerated my lawn last Labor Day with an attachment to my riding mower.I did it when the soil was pretty dry therefore did not go that deep. An aerator you rent from Home Depot is very hard to use unless you are young and strong! I have seen very good results with a slit seeder also! |
