| I live on Long Island and had cesspools replaced in early March 2012. We have had a few major rains this spring and summer and it looks like MAJOR ground settling is slowing down.
I need to add several yards of new top soil to refill and regrade my lawn then reseed. Question is is it preferable to do this in the fall (September/ October) or the spring? I am asking for 2 reasons: Do I wait longer for further settling (minimal over the last 2 months) versus giving the new topsoil time itself to settle and let the new grass start. ALSO I have a preponderance of weeds in the dirt where there is no grass. DO I have to use a grass/ weed killer before adding topsoil?? Much appreciate any input!!

| Definitely in the fall. Since you have to put new seed down, you want to do that in the fall. In your area I'd be hauling the new dirt in now. And you do not need to kill the weeds first. Burying them is good enough. The new soil will settle, too. If you have a landscaper do this work, he can use a machine to settle it a little better right away. Even driving a tractor over it is better than nothing. I don't suppose you have a herd of cattle you could stampede over it do you? |

| David, thank you for the reply. I am in fact having my landscaper do it and I'll presume he at least has a good roller. No cows to stampede but squirrels, cats, dogs, rabbits, raccoons a plenty. |
