lawn renovation and 2 large active dogs

we have never had anywhere close to a "perfect" lawn. This is partly due to a more relaxed approach to lawn care, especially when kids were young and life was busy. We also have 2 large active dogs who are contained in the yard by the invisible fence system. They are part of the family and as such, have full run of our property. Between kids and dogs, the front lawn has always seen a lot of activity and not much in the way of fertilizer or weed kliller. For a number of years the front yard was acceptable. A few dandelions, some clover and then crabgrass but nothing overwhelming. However, in the last couple years the weeds have multiplied, especially areas of crabgrass. And now, this summer, crabgrass has taken over a good percentage of our front lawn.
My question is whether anyone has had experience renovating a lawn in "sections" using some type of temporary fencing. Or would aerating and/or de-thatching then over-seeding the entire front lawn help in anyway or would that be a wasted effort?
