Seeding New Lawn - Timing Question

It's been a few years since I did a Fall renovation of a lawn; I remember some of how to do it, but have forgotton a lot, too. I have a key question of the timing of seeding....

I am in Central Maryland, zone 7. I generally remember that ideally speaking, the last weeks of August are when to "get the soil/ground ready" time. Then seed one of the first two weeks of Sept - followed by the right watering schedule.

Howeever, this year we have to be away from Sept. 10th through the 20th. In light of our being gone, I'm going to do it this way:

1. Have soil/ground preparations finished, and seed the weekend of Aug. 20-21st.

2. Proper watering until we leave (Sept 10th), when watering will end. Hoping for some rain in those 10 days.

3. When we return we figure we'll have lost some of the growth - but we will overseed and pick up where we left off.

IS AUG. 20TH-21ST TOO EARLY?

What thinketh thou?

i would try to wait until first week in september...maryland probably still can be pretty hot around aug 20th.

RE: Seeding New Lawn - Timing Question

We're thinking that if we wait till the first week of Sept, none of it will be established before we leave sept. 10th.

But, if we're very diligent to water and care for seed started on August 21st, that some will have time to get a good start before we leave.

Is that good or bad reasoning? This all revolves around the fact we are leaving for 10 days - Sept. 10th till the 21st.

It is a part shade section of lawn, and is all new seeding, not overseeding.

Is there no way to water while you are gone?

Continuing.... (it wouldn't let me post w/o changing subject titl

Unfortunately there is no way to water while we are gone. The entire extended family is attending a wedding, and we barely know any neighbors --- new house, new area, and we are all spread out on 2+ acres between houses. No sprinkler system.

Can you put sprinklers on timers while you are gone? Mid September is a crap shoot for temps/rain in Maryland, as you know! If timers are not possible, I would take the chance and get as much started before you go. Worst case you lose some seedlings.

I think getting a timer system set up would be the best. If you do that and can, ask a neighbor to check on the system every day or so to make sure it's functioning. Timers are notorious for failing. Otherwise, give it your best shot.
