| I bought two spray bottles of this stuff from HD the other day in an attempt to control the Nutsedge in my lawn prior to a pretty brutal overseeding job upcoming on Sept. 9. I wanted to at least try this stuff before going online and ordering Sedgehammer, which I hear works very well.
My report:
Now, four days later, much of it is yellow. Crispy yellow. Dying. This stuff is the real deal. about 8 bucks for 24oz. I'm going back for another couple of bottles to finish the rest of it off. I am hoping that the product does as advertised and goes deep into the tubers, but I won't be able to report on that until the spring (hopefully). Anybody else have anything to report on this stuff, good or bad? Oh and I'm overseeding on Sept. 9... anybody see any issues with using another round of this stuff tomorrow? Issues with new germination when I overseed in a few weeks? |

I've never used that product but the label may say something about germination. I have found Ortho to be quite cryptic with their labels so you may end up needing to call them on that one. It's an important question. It probably would also be good to use a surfactant with it too. I think there's a homeowner version called spreader-sticker.

Ok so I called Ortho and the guy said it would be safe to use even though I'm overseeding soon. So I'm thinking I can spray on the few remaining nutsedge plants I still have. Keep in mind that I am overseeding in three weeks - Sept. 9. Anybody eles see any problems using the nutsedge killer this close to seeding? The nutsedge killer doesn't seem to be a pre-emergent, so I think it will be ok. Just want to see if anybody else has any input/advice... Thanks,

Interesting! I bought sedgehammer last year and have only just used it. It seems very slow compared to the Ortho stuff but its working very well now and i think all my nutsedge has been stopped in its tracks and is dying. Im also waiting to overseed, i think if you spot spray again next week you should be fine by sept 9th, im aiming for that date also. good luck!

How often are you guys watering and for how long? Would you describe your worst nut grass areas as 'high ground' or 'low ground?' Do you have a lot of clay in your soil?

My worst areas are in lower spots. Soil is not very clayey. I had a few inches of topsoil put down last fall before planting the lawn. So maybe the nuts came in with the soil? I knew this would be a couple of years of work before the new lawn was established and mature so I guess this is just part of the process. Still, if anyone can give advice on if it is safe to use this stuff prior to overseeding in 3 weeks, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I watered infrequently in the very hot periods, and only enough for an inch. When it was hot the sprinklers were on every 7 days or so for an hour or two only. My grass is cut at the highest but one setting on my toro personal pace recycler, i believe about 3.75 - 3.5 inchs or so. When its on the highest it tends to fall over sometimes. The nut grass started on the strip of garss we have between the road and the sidewalk. Started on one side in spring and now it reached 3/4s of the way across - hence i needed sedgehammer! That is level lower ground. I also have 2 spots by the house with is at the top of a downward slope. Havent used any top soil so dont knwo where the nuts cam from. The neighbors opposite are infested, its moving from their house towards the road and me! Luckkily all mine seems to have died now. My soil is very "earthy" im not sure how else to describe it. Its dark brown, not alot of sand or clay just like rich topsoil.

You will want to wait 4 weeks before reseeding after use of this product.

Ugh. Too late. I applied it to some of the lawn where the sedge was pretty thick yesterday. Is it a guarantee that TTTF seeds won't germinate after using this? It will be about 3 weeks after use. I am I totally screwed or is it just a recommendation and the seeds may still germinate? Anybody know the chemistry why the seeds won't germ after using this 3 weeks before seeding?? Ugh.
