What is the rule of thumb when putting out fertilizer with animals or children?

Fertilize, water it in or let a good rain do it, don't worry about the dogs or kids unless you see them eating handfuls of it. Fertilizer is pretty harmless unless ingested and once it's watered in, the highly soluble compounds will be gone or almost gone. Most bags of fertilizer have instructions regarding pets and children, but if it was dangerous and there were a lot of kids/pets getting sick, you would hear a lot more news reports about it.

Just spread it and water it in. Then forget about it. Its the organic stuff you have to worry about like chicken litter or manure compost.

Or use an organic fertilizer/animal feed and watch your lawn get 10x nicer and allow both the kids and pets to eat it because it's food. :-)

Go get some alfalfa pellets.

Nothing like the faces of my neighbors as I walk around with my spreader full of "fertilizer" and have my kid or dog right behind me picking up pieces and putting them in there mouth. (Although I tried a piece of alfalfa and almost vomited because it was so dry. Gross.)
