Contractors often use "contractor grade" seed which is no good. You might need to kill it and start over with good seed or at least over seed with good stuff.

The problem was doing it in June. The only worse month would be July.

NOW is the time to plan your new yard. And tomorrow is the time to seed, so lets get planning.

Crabgrass is an annual grass that dies completely at the first frost. That might be a while, so if you want to seed now you either need to power rake it out or kill it off. There are some new crabgrass killer herbicides, but I don't use them, so I don't pay a lot of attention when others talk about them. Search this forum. You won't have to go back farther than a week or two.

If you have broadleaf weeds, you can spray with Weed-b-gone to get those.

Contractor grade grass seed can be amazing with the right care. It's inexpensive and you can get it at any home depot or Lowe's or Walmart. It comes with some weeds, but you can deal with them once you have real grass growing. With seed you get what you pay for. You can get seed online with zero weeds in it, but it will cost you.

In TN you can grow just about any grass. With dogs you might want to consider bermuda. Bermuda will bounce back from wear and tear. It does require full sun. And now that I look at this, now is NOT the time to seed bermuda. But the alternatives cannot stand up to hard play like bermuda can. You can buy bermuda seed pretty cheap but nothing will happen if you put it out now. Or you can buy bermuda sod for about $50 per pallet. That gives you an instant lawn which will need some extra care now, while knitting to the soil, and extra care later with mowing and fertilizing.

So before I get any farther into creating a lawn, what do you think you might want to do? If you want bermuda you can still do that this year but only with sod. If you want something like Kentucky bluegrass or fescue, you can do that now. Fescue will not stand up to traffic at all. KBG will, but not like bermuda.
