| Hey guys,
I need to renovate my backyard lawn.I went on vacation for a little over 2 weeks with a broken sprinkler and everything died. I have not watered the back lawn for about 2-3 months everything is dead. I scalped the lawn and dug out the few remaining weeds. When I originally planted the lawn I tore out all the existing sod and planted in bare dirt, but I do not feel like doing that again. I was thinking since the lawn is dead and cut down to less than half and inch I could just rent a power rake and re-seed. I have never done this before though and I don't want to waste my time and money. I live near Fairfield (Northern California)It is pretty hot right now, I am not sure when I should seed the back lawn until it cools down a bit. |

| No problem to plant over your current yard, the way it is. I wouldn't recommend power raking. I would do either verticut (2 times - 1 times before seed and 1 time after) or aerate - my preferred approach. Aerate at least three times. The seed that falls into the holes stays moist longer so it does better with less water. Either way, water it just as you would any fresh lawn. |

| Oh I did a google search for verticutters but I dont see them available in any of the rental stores I have been looking at. Do they ever go by a different name? |
