Overseeding questions

Location: Central Indiana.
Currently my yard is planted with 'Scott's Sun and Shade' seeds. Yard was
great in the spring. But during summer I was out on a vacation for 1 month
and hot weather damaged/killed bunch of grass. And it is looking bad.

'Scott's sun and shade mix:
9% - Wendy Jean Creeping red fescue
9% - Uno Parannial Rye Grass
9% - Silver Dollar Parannial RYe Grass
9% - Wildhorse Kentucky Blue Grass
5% - Fenway creeping red fescue
50% - Water smart coating

I am thinking of over seeding it. I think I will continue my front yard with
'Scott's sun and shade' mix as I had a great result last fall.

My back yard gets 8-10 hours of sun. I am thinking of over seeding back yard
with Scotts' Heat Tolerant Mix. I do not want to completely redo my back yard just over seed it.

Scotts Heat Tolerant Mix
15% - Innovator Tall Fescue
15% - Matador GT Tall Descue
15% - Faith Tall Fescue
5% - Thermal Blue Kentucky Blue Grass
50% - Water Smart coating

Questions:
1. Should I stick to 'Sun and shade' mix considering my back yard gets 8-10 hours of sun each day?
2. If I decide to go with 'Heat Tolerant' mix for back yard then is it going to blend in with my current yard? Or is it going to look ugly?
3. When is the right time for the over seeding?
4. Any other suggestions?

RE: Overseeding questions

1. 8-10 hours qualifies for "full sun". You can do a Sun & Shade mix, but the red fescues will probably not make it. Do you have any tree cover or area that justify "Shade", if not, waste to use Sun & Shade.

2. The fescue is not going to blend well with your KBG and RYE. The fescue is a coarser blade, and without looking up each cultivar, possibility that they are also different colors. You can do it, but usually not recommended.

3. Right now!

4. Research and properly prep and water the area. If not, then don't waste your time. Also, the Scotts stuff isn't really that great. Expensive and as you can see, 50% of the weight your paying for is there "water smart coating". Again, if your watering correctly, it's just a gimmick. You should look into your local supply companies and see what seed is available. Non big box stores.

Good luck. ..I just seeded 2 days ago.

just noticed

BTW that first mix only adds up to 91% ??? I hope the rest isn't inert and weeds.
