Prepping for fall

Hey folks,
I'm getting ready to overseed in a few weeks and I had some areas in my lawn that didn't do too well this year...short roots, low spots, areas of bent grass? But a lot of it is in good condition. So I've got 3 yards of compost coming tomorrow and I just want to know the best way of incorporating it into my lawn. Do I just spread it around my troubled spots and till it in? Do I have to remove the grass first? Any tips are apprceciated.

Tilling can create more headaches for you. Do you know why that area does poorly? Different soil? Stone near the surface? Poor drainage? You may want to consider a soil test.

Just spread the compost over the soil. You could also use it as a topdressing over the seed if spread thinly. I have aerated then spread compost and draged it into the holes but that is not worth the cost of renting an aerator. Be careful as to the quality of your compost. Poor compost (compost that has not decayed long enough or is still "hot" - fresh animal waste) can have a detrimental affect on seed.

When I bought this house 5 years ago, this side of my lawn was covered in moss. Adding lime never helped. It wasn't until last year when I used Moss Out liquid and pulled up the moss with a dethaching rake did the grass finally take hold. Soil tests showed only about 2% of (compost stuff...forgot the term) and PH was at 5.5. Drainage is fine, areated last fall, but there are some part of the lawn where I can pull the grass out with ease. I'll try to post pictures if I can figure out how.

What is the soil like? Sandy? 2% of organic matter is low- compost will help that, so will adding other organics throughout the year (alfalfa pellets). 5.5 PH is low, but not a major detriment. There are experts here who may give you an application rate for lime to correct that if you have the tec or cec from the soil test.
Your moss problem makes me wonder how much sun the area gets. You may need to use a more shade tolerant grass.

Funny you should mention how much sun. At this moment there's a crane in my yard that's about to take down 15 of my tallest pine trees that block the sun on that side of my lawn :)
