| I live in North Mississippi (Zone 7) and have just bought a house with about 3 acres of what I think was a bermuda lawn. It looks like mostly bermuda. I am not sure if all of the non-bermuda is just weeds or any other type grasses, but Bermuda seeems the most prevalent grass in my lawn.
I want to get it back to a Bermuda lawn and need advice on how to attack the weeds, first. Then I want to put a year-round fertilizer/herbicide program in place. At my old house I had a professionak that came 4 times a year to spray. I have no idea what he may have used, but I had different grass type. I have any necessary equipment that I should need. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. -Mickey |

| Well Mickey relax for now as you have all winter to learn how to take care of your Bermuda. Then next spring you can get started. For now just keep it mowed, watered, and fertlized to get what you do have healthy and ready for its winter nap. If you plan on seeding next spring, do not use any per-emergence herbicide after September. Come this winter after the Bermuda is fully dormant, you can spray anything green with Round Up. In the meantime find the Bermuda Bible and print it out. I cannot show you a link to it because the system will not let me. If I spelled it out for you I would be banned from the forum. But you could send me a PM if you want. |

| Thank you for that resource. I printed it and will go over it this weekend. I, like many, have been a lurker on these forums for most of this year. It is a wonderful place to come and ask questions when you are afraid of feeling stupid elsewhere. Is it a good idea to go ahead and do a soil test through my local extension service, or is there a better time of year? I think my primary problem may be identifying all the weed varieties over the entire lawn. It is a pretty big yard and there are many many differen types of weeds, lol. And once I get done, there may be less real grass that I thought. Thank you again for your help. -Mickey |

| Is it a good idea to go ahead and do a soil test through my local extension service, or is there a better time of year? Sure right now is the best time, and there is no real bad time. Just ignore any nitrogen results as they will always be too low. Concentrate on PH correction if any needs done, and P&K levels plus any micro nutrients. Just don't go pushing a lot of nitrogen for the rest of this season. Bermuda is a nitrogen hog, but attack that next spring. It is just too hot and dry right now to be feeding nitrogen and not much of the season left. For now get prepared for next spring. Correct PH and P&K levels to be ready for next spring. Then raise he!!. |
