What kind of soil to use?

I live in las Vegas, Nevada. I want to plant grass, most likely bermuda, in my back yard. My backyard consists of lots of 1/2" rock and dirt. I am in the process of getting rid of all of the rock. What I will have left after the rock goes is hard desert ground, almost clay like. I want to know what kind of topsoil and how much should I use? I plan on using Bermuda sod.

Zero additional soil UNLESS you have drainage issues. Your soil is probably at the ideal profile to drain water away from all the buildings and from your neighbors. If that is not the case, then attach pictures and we can take another look. That decision is really up to a local landscaper who can cut the profile in for proper drainage.

Since you do not have sand for your base, you might want to have a soil test done. That will tell you what to put on the soil to fix it. In the mean time you can do a "jar test." Get a jar with straight sides on it. Fill it half way with dirt. Then fill it all the way with water and one drop of dish soap. Put the lid on the jar and shake it. After 2 minutes take a picture with a ruler nest to the jar. After 2 hours take another picture. After 2 days take another picture. What has settled at 2 minutes is sand and rock. What has settled after 2 hours is silt. What does not settle even after 2 days is clay. Organic matter floats on top.

What you are looking for in the soil test is metals like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Those usually come as a salt form like sodium chloride, etc. There are certain mixes of those metals which will cause even sand to act like clay. Getting them in proper proportion is not that hard usually.
