Low maintenance lawn alternatives

We're buying a ex-horse pasture property on 8 acres. We're building the house near the street, and will be planting KBG in the front yard and maybe 50' behind the house. We'll have an irrigation system in place for this portion of the property.

The rest of the property we plan to plant trees but not super densely. We won't be irrigating back there. We can mow, but would prefer something pretty low maintenance.

What is a good low maintenance ground cover that will stay green all summer on typical Ohio rainfall that we can use in this situation? Soil is a clay loam, probably neutral pH (low to mid 7s, haven't tested it, but I'm going off general soils in this area).

The only one I can think of is white clover...any others??
