 o
Moss and Grass

Two questions - We have a bunch of moss that grows at one part of the yard. I removed some trees in that area because no sunlight was getting in and figured it attributed to the moss. Now the moss is turning a yellowish color - is it dying?

For other parts of my lawn where moss exists, do I just rake it up and dispose of it? What is the best way to dispose?

After removal I want to plant grass seed. Do I again use a steel rake to break up the ground where the moss was, and seed, then cover with small amount of soil? Any specific seed/soil to use?

Finally I have part of the lawn where, not sure if it is grass (thick green blades, but looks like it spawns from a root like a weed) should I use a specific weed killer/lawn fertilizer to try to kill it, then rake and seed alike?

Thanks for any suggestions. Just moved into our first home and trying to revitalize a long ignored yard.

Scott

RE: Moss and Grass

Where do you live?

Are you willing to water it once you have a lawn?

Are you willing to mow it?

Are you willing to fertilize it?

What is your budget for the revitalization?

How much shade will there be over the area?

Moss is a sign of poor soil caused by poor management. For now you might consider applying compost, as much as you can afford, in the really poor areas. You don't need more than 1/4 inch which is 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet.
