Separated seams in Tifgrand sod

I'm a little concerned about the sod I laid 3 days ago separating at the seams. The sod is Tifgrand supplied in rolls 2'x4'. The area is 500sq.ft. I scratched the surface to about 1"-2" depth and added some top soil to a low area. I did not roll the surface or the sod after laying. I was careful to butt the seams. I was concerned about making it too tight and lifting the sod from the surface. Now, some of the seams have parted about and inch or a little more. I have been watering twice a day for 30 min. with an oscillating sprinkler. I can push a screwdriver into the ground 4"-6" and it is moist. Should I be concerned?

Water it more! My experience has been that if the sod is separating, it needs more water. Sod needs tons of water. Pour it on.

Concerned no. As stated you are watering incorrectly. You are watering too long too infrequently. Cut down to 10 minutes and up to 6 times per say until the sod take roots, then start weening it off water. The grass will quickly fill in the gaps. You can even help it along after the sod takes roots bu filling the low spots created by the gaps with sand or topsoil. Just be sure to water, mow and fertilize your investment correctly. Bermuda is a nitrogen eating machine and needs fed once a month during growing season.

Thanks for the responses. I'll adjust my timer to water every 4 hours at 10 min. each. I had heard years ago that watering at night promoted fungus growth. Is this just hearsay? I realize that it can rain anytime, so it would seem that theory has no merit.

Yes, watering at night is asking for fungus, but to do it for a week or two to get the sod established should be fine. If it's possible, don't allow the sprinklers to run between 8 pm and 3 am. That shouldn't hurt the turf to not water for that period.

Watering late in the evening can promote fungal growth. Just make your last setting about an hour or so before sunset so the grass blades have dried. You can program the first setting of the day an hour or so before sun up.

Thanks again, I'll follow your recommendations. Another question: should I have rolled the sod after laying? I thought it would compact the soil too much. My soil is South Carolina clay, primarily. I guess it would be too late to roll now. It's been down for 4 days. |

Not much rooting has happened in 4 days. I would water the hell out of it and during one of the times that it was a bit more dry I would roll it... soon. Basically press it to the soil surface and keep it wet. Its bermuda right? You'll be fine...its a weed.

Well excuse me for saying so but DUH. It may still be of some benefit to roll it, but not much. Have the edges browned out?
RE: Separated seams in Tifgrand sod

Yes, the edges did brown out after the first day or so, but I wasn't water enough of according to TW. As of yesterday I have started watering every 3 hrs. for 10 min. at a time. But, yes some of the edges are brown.

Here are links to photos of my sod. You can see the joints and slight browning. I hope the links work. Thanks, http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n564/hdog1/0808110855.jpg http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n564/hdog1/0808110854.jpg |

Your fine just keep it watered, mowed. and fed. FWIW it looks like it is time to mow.

Thanks TW. I was wondering how soon it would be safe to mow. I will do that tomorrow. I'll also get some fertilizer on it in the next few days. I did put some starter fertilizer on the surface before laying the sod. On another note, I wanted to get the photos in the message, but couldn't figure out how. That will be for another day.

Say that the hosting place was www.google.com/picasa and the picture name was 8112011-001.jpg you would have...
