What is this?

And how do I get rid of it? It's taking over my backyard.

That is wild violets. Any product with 8% Triclopyr as the active ingredient will take care of it but you must be persistant. Spray once per week until completely dead.

The easiest option would be Glyphosate (Round Up) which will kill everything including your lawn. From there you could reseed this fall.
