Best way to water grass

Posted by gentleman-farmer TX (My Page) on

I am in Southeast Texas and trying to take care of my lawn. I have some weeds and some spots that need some love and care.

I don't have a sprinkler system so I try to get out there regularly and water the grass with a couple sprinklers units attached to a hose.

What's the best way to water them? Currently I do like 40 minutes at around 6pm when it's not so hot. I don't know if I should go longer though, more/less frequently, etc etc. I'm new to this lawn care stuff.
Thank you.

The best way to know how much, is by placing a tuna can in the yard while watering. Once it is filled you have achieved 1in of water. 1 in is usually good per week. This makes for a long deep soaking to get nice in deep in the root zone, rather then frequent short cycles.

6pm is not ideal as the moisture sits overnight and can encourage disease. Most recommend early morning.

Agreed. Keep an eye on the grass. If you have St Augustine, it will look wilty when it needs water. If it starts to turn brown, you might be too late to catch it before it dies. Keep it mowed at the mower's highest setting and, this time of year, you might let it go a few weeks between mowing.

If you have bermuda, you can let it go completely dormant (brown) and it will return without missing a beat with one dose of water. Keep bermuda mowed at the mower's lowest setting for the best appearance.

What kind of grass do you have?

I googled both st aug and bermuda. They look the same on images. How do I know which I have?

When I saw st aug I said.. that's it... but then I saw bermuda and thought, "or maybe it's this". lol

I will try to water in the morning but I do it manually so I turn it on and off myself, and hence, need to be home.

You can buy hose timers for relatively little money at Home Depot. You can set them to go off at a specific time for a specific duration.

The best way to identify grasses is by the seed head. Here is a picture of the two you are interested in.

St Augustine very rarely develops a seed head. Bermuda will get seed heads in about 2 weeks after watering. Note also the relative difference is size of the grass blades in the photo. Bermuda is a fine bladed grass. St Aug is a coarse bladed grass much like crabgrass. Just to confuse you there are several other types of grass that look like either one of these depending on how closely you look at them.
