Pennington Smart Seed

Just wondering if anyone has tried this seed and how well it works. I would be looking at the Tall Fescue variety.

Does anyone know what cultivars the Tall Fescue product includes?

Thanks.

Depends on the year and location, so you have to look at the label on the bag. I have seen variations on cultivars in 3 lb bags compared to the larger bags (10 lbs I think) in the same store. Of the seeds at Home Depot Pennington's tall fescue blends tend to be very good.

I found Pennington Smart Seed at Home Depot today. This is what the 20 pound back contained (I rounded cultivar numbers):

44% Virtue II Tall Fescue
27% Justice Tall Fescue
27% Greystone Tall Fescue

1.19% Inert Matter
.20% Other cropseed
.02% Weed seed

Those are all good older cultivars. They perform well, but there are better ones out there. The thing about turfgrasses is that they are perennial, unlike barley, oats, wheat, etc. So it is much more economical to harvest the same cultivars over and over again as they regrow every year. So the big seed companies aren't going to plow under these fields to grow newer better ones anytime soon. If you want a nice lawn then these will do, but again, there are better cultivars out there.
