ground hard as concrete

I am trying to take a soil sample but the ground is so hard I can not get a sample. We did get about an inch of rain today but the ground is still hard. It has been a long dry summer. How long before the ground softens up, I guess I just need to be more patient.

I think that when you do finally get a soil test you will find your organic matter levels are very low. There are other things that can contribute to hard soil other than low OM, such as a low Ca/Mg ratio. With an inch of rain your soil shouldn't be this hard.
