With cool-season bunchgrasses (fescues, ryegrasses) is it more desireable to have a few large bunches, or many small bunches constituting a lawn? When I look at the turfgrowers' photos, I notice they have mature plants that have a large radius. Would medium to large bunches be acceptable for a lawn? Because, that's what naturally happens when bunchgrasses thin out over time. The plants tiller out from the center and get larger. How large are the bunches in an optimal lawn going to be?

Are you asking this to decide on a seeding rate? Just stay in the middle somewhere. In a nice lawn, you don't see the bunches, just a uniform stand of grass. For what it's worth, I haven't had to overseed my lawn, it was seeding in 2009. TTTF spreads, albeit very slowly and only when mature, but it does spread despite what you might have read.

Very good. I can rest assured now, I guess.
