Live in Phoenix - Need to fix bare spots of grass in my lawn.

I live in Phoenix, AZ. My front yard is currently dead (bad landscaper before) and has always been very spotty. My backyard has a lot of areas of just dirt with no grass. I want to have a green yard again. (yes I live in a desert but I always grew up with grass.) It is still 110+ here during the day and high 80s, low 90s at night. I am going to overseed for the Winter also but we don't do that here till October. So my question is, when should I go thru and add my grass seed to my annual grass? I believe I currently have Bermudagrass. I am only about a month or so away from letting my summer grass go dorment so I can start the overseeding for my winter rye. Everything I find online says the best time to fix bare areas of your lawn is in the fall but of course during that time I will be planting my rye. Debating about waiting for the spring after my rye grass dies off. Suggestions??

I appreciate your insights. Thank you

With reference to everyone says to plant in fall does not apply to you because they are talking about cool season grasses. You do not live in cool season grass country, you live in he!! where warm season grass grow like Bermuda.

Now with that said you need to wait until October to seed Rye grass which is a cool season grass. Then next spring you can seed with Bermuda grass but you had better have an irrigation system of a very small area that you can manage with a hose sprinkler.

So you would just leave the lawn the way it is for a month and then do the Rye grass for the winter and then in the spring put down more Bermuda grass? I did not know if I put down more seed now, if a month (probably 45 days) will be enough for the seeds to grow roots so they come back next year.

I greatly appreciate your help.

Guessing I will just wait till the spring to redo my Bermuda grass.....afraid I will spend the money and do the work just to have it all go dormant before the roots have a choice to grow and come back next year.

Not enough time left this year for Bermuda grass to get established and then have to compete with Rye grass.

Bermuda needs to be established for at least 100 days before you overseed. Seeding now is a waste of time and money.

Niceman, do you have an irrigation system? Grass is not natural in Phoenix like you have noted. I dont want you working too hard on this and ruining your good disposition.

Also, are there "no watering seasons" out there? Lake Meade water shortage and all? If so I would just give up on the whole grass thing and embrace what is natural and easier.

Phoenix water supply primarily comes from the the Salt and Verde Rivers which are supplied by mountain snows to the north and east of Phoenix. Very little water comes from the Colorado river.
