Perennial Ryegrass taking over my lawn!

Hello,

Since buying my house in 2008, I have slowly nursed my lawn to health, and it is now relatively green and soft year round. However, a couple years ago, I seeded a large fresh area and overseeded the rest of the lawn with a cheap Vigoro seed mix that contains "Self-Repairing Perennial Ryegrass".

Now, as the regular grass grows slowly thanks to the hot, dry weather, this mutant ryegrass grows about 3 inches a week, no exaggeration. The blades are thick, the color is lighter, and they just look flat out awful.

So my question is... is there any efficient way of eliminating this grass and only this grass? It can be easily pulled out by hand once it grows long enough, roots and all, but I would need a full day and a new lower back to clear half the lawn. And I'm skeptical that it would stay away once pulled thanks to that "self-repairing" thing.

Any thoughts? I really appreciate any help.
