Different grasses require different amounts of fertilizer, and theoretically you could fertilize every week, but the amount of fertilizer would have to be very small. Let's say the fields are Bermuda grass. In the growing season Bermuda requires about 1 lb of nitrogen per 1000 square feet, per month. Now if you broke that up into .20-.25 lb increments, you could fertilize every week, and in a way, it is a better to fertilize this way as it minimizes leaching, and provides a steady stream of nitrogen instead of one big shot, even though slow release fertilizer exists and could do the same job with a monthly application (it's also probably more expensive than quick release fert). Fertilizer is relatively harmless, unless you get it in your eye, or eat a bunch of it. Most fertilizers should be watered in after application, which will dissolve a good portion of any fertilzer put down. Does the school irrigate after applying fertilizer?

I would say you, the school, and the state are all over reacting and making mountains out of mole hills. There is no legitimate reason to even keep the kids off the grounds the day of or day after they fertilize with 15-15-15.

Everyone knows that there is no Nitrogen, Potassium, or Phosphorus in the human body so the school should be concerned over their lack of knowledge.

Remember all chemicals are bad. The number one overdosed chemical in the world to day is water. More people die of over doses of water than any other chemical.
