Lawn in disrepair and don't know where to start

Our lawn was in need of care when we bought our house a year ago but after a few months of major drought/high heat/water restrictions this year in San Antonio, our lawn is in bad shape and I do not know where to even start on repairing it. Most of it is now brown with lots of huge bare spots. We have a good size back yard and front yard and replacing it all with sod would be something we could not afford and the sod available right now is terrible looking.

It seems we have a mixture of types of grasses but a good part of it is St Augustine I believe. Most of it is brown in our back yard but in our front yard it is greener under the oak tree Photobucket

The St. Augustine seems to only grow in the more shady areas under our Oak Trees and as you get further away from the shade the grass grows less and we have huge bare spots with really no grass at all.

The questions I have are:

1. If this is St Augustine, why does it seem to grow in more shadier areas? I thought it preferred full sun or am I wrong?
2. I know St. Augustine normally spreads, how can I promote it to spread out to these bare areas?
3. Since we are coming into fall season (but it is still very hot and still little rain) am I limited on what I can do at this point to start the repair process?
4. With the areas that contain non St Augustine grass should I get rid of the grass that is there?
5. Is there another type of grass seed that I can mix with the existing St Augustine that would look similar and would be easier to fill in the big bare areas?

I will be glad to provide more info if needed and if you need better pictures I can provide them using a real camera rather than my phone...

Thank you!

I am very interested in hearing what the experts have to say also. I am in Austin with the same problem. I also laid sod in the back yard last fall and busted my butt taking care of it but the high heat and lack of water due to water restrictions its mostly brown and dead looking with the roots showing. Curious what I can do just like the original poster. I really dont want my yard looking like this for all of fall and winter.

Thanks.

ATX,

Sorry you are experiencing similar issues. Its been a brutal summer here in Texas! Hopefully we will get some feedback!

I am not experienced in warm season grass, but here is my 2 cents.

First, the grass will spread when it is healthy. When things are dry and super hot, it has just enough resources to stay alive. To encourage more spreading you most order rain. :) If only...

My understanding is that the fall is not the best time to work with warm season grass (unlike cool season). Your best thing to do right now may be just to keep it watered (only before it goes dormant).

It is interesting that the grass would grow better in the shade as usually the opposite is usually the case. However, due to the lack of solar load, it may be that the area under the tree doesn't dry out as quickly and retains moisture better then areas in the sun.

Hopefully one of the warm season guru's will fill in any details I left out (and correct me if necessary ;) ).

Yes, rain would certainly help, but wishful thinking these days ;) We may get a little bit soon but will just have to cross our finders. In any event, feel free to send rain our way...;)

I did neglect to say that I have a sprinkler system but we are limited to watering one day a week right now.....
