Need review of what I am doing

Hi,

Two years ago, I purchase a house near Chicagoland. Previously, I lived in the city and did not have lawn, so it was a challenge to learn to keep one. The grass appears to be mostly KBG.

Here's the soil test from last year:

Organic Matter, 7.4% (very high)
Phosphorus 9 ppm P (very low)
Potassium 168 ppm K (medium)
Magnesium 805 ppm Mg (very high)
Calcium 3150 ppm ca (medium)
cation Exchange Capacity 22.9 meq/100g (very high)
pH 7.5 (slightly alkaline)

Last year, a drought followed by grub damage several parts of the lawn. This year, the rainfall have been fairly high and the grass have mostly recovered on one side of the house, but the other side is still patchy.

Last year, I dethatched, topdressed with compost, then ringer restore. I attempted to repair some off the smaller patches in the area with reseeding. The attempt have been mostly successful, except for the shady areas. I also realized now that my topdress was too thin.

This year, I started out in spring with corn guten meal. Near the end of summer I put down some milky spores. In early fall, I dethached, and added some ringer restore and then follow it up with a 1/4" of compost on the damaged section of the lawn and overseed.

Am I doing OK or is there something else I should be doing?

Paul

You should not be expecting any grass to grow in the shady area unless you seeded with fescue. KBG is a full sun type of grass.

If you really want to go after this, start using something like alfalfa meal (or rabbit pellets) or soy bean meal every month until the KBG goes dormant. Then in the spring try to predict when the KBG will return and use alfalfa or soy 3 weeks prior to that date. Then continue every month with that. App rate would be 20 pounds per 1,000.

I would not use compost unless you get it for free. It is far too expensive for annual use, in my opinion. You can buy a LOT of organic fertilizer for the price of one app of compost.

Oops, typo. The sunny side failed reseeding. It's not the shaded side that failed. In fact, the shaded side grows faster for some reason.

OK, so don't do top dressing because it's cost prohibited (cost is $30 per cubic yard. I need like 6) and just use alfalfa meal from now on? Put it down every month?

That's not KBG on the side, if it is thriving and growing faster in the shade.

In fact, sounds like that same grass was out in the sunny areas ... where it does not prefer to be.

That grass is called poa trivialis.
