Please, Is it a good idea to dethatch Zoysia Grass in the fall before it goes dormant ? I dethatched once this summer, but it is REALLY thick again (is that the nature of the beast with an early cool down?). Thank you.

I'm not familiar with the type grass but its a good idea to open the soil to allow moisture greater entry. Thatch build-up can often prevent proper amounts of moisture to reach the roots, setting up drier times which can create shallow rooting which then is open to drying out and spring grass needing more attention. The usual advice about thatch removal in the fall is to use a fan rake, first one way, then the opposite direction. A topping of 1/2" of topsoil/compost/triple mix is then recommended. If you have a left-over bag of potting soil, or the soil from your dead annuals, sprinkle this over your lawn. Let the worms take it down. Over this, do a fall overseeding whether your lawn is in great shape or not. This, done every spring and fall, builds the grass's strength to fend off pests.

What I have seen is that warm season grasses should not be dethatch heavily in the fall, since dethatching damages grass and it will be weak for the winter. Zoysia, in particular, should be dethatched in the early to mid-summer only.
